Apple TV Jailbreaking

Do you have a second generation Apple TV? It can be jailbroken! (These are the 720p models from 2010 with the A4. You can pick them up on amazon for about $200)

Jailbreaking 101

Welcome new Jailbreakers,

If you are reading this then you have not only managed to jailbreak, but also to install this app! Congrats! So what are some of the most common things to know about jailbreaking?

What is Jailbreaking?

iOS Jailbreaking is the process of removing limitations on iOS. Jailbreaking permits root access to to the iOS File System allowing the user to download apps, themes and tweaks not allowed in the App Store.

Will it ruin my iPhone?

Of course not. You can jailbreak, and then not change a single other thing on your device. Until you start installing things, you will only have a new app called Cydia.

Is it legal? Does it void my warranty?

Jailbreaking is 100% legal; it will void your warranty however. If you need to send your device into Apple, simply restore in iTunes and they will never know it was jailbroken.

Can I unjailbreak?

Of course! Simply plug your device into iTunes to restore it! It will return into the state it was before jailbreaking. You can do this by clicking the restore button.

I screwed things up.

Sometimes you install a tweak that doesn't work quite right. This is easy to fix. Simply open Cydia and remove that package. If you can't do that, turn your device off and boot into safe mode. Do this by turning your device off and holding the volume up button. If worst comes to worst, simply restore in iTunes and rejailbreak.

Search "Learn HTML Basics" in the app store to get the app!"

Learn HTML Basics is the best app to teach you about the basics of not only HTML but also JavaScript and CSS! We will also learn how to make our very own native apps with Cordova (PhoneGap)! This app features great in depth guides and tutorials with screenshots and videos!

This is the perfect app for anyone with no prior knowledge. We will start out by explaining some basic HTML and then move into some CSS and Javascript.

Jailbreaking 101

I've collected some terms that every jailbreaker should know! Give these a quick read trough.

Untethered vs. Tethered

What does it mean if a jailbreak is untethered vs. tethered? Untether means you can turn off your device and reboot without having to plug into your computer and rejailbreak. If your jailbreak is tethered than you need to re jailbreak everytime your device is turned off. Any device before and including the A4 are jailbroken for life even though it is tethered.

Userland vs. Bootrom

A userland jailbreak is a bug in the software that allows a device to be jailbroken. Apple can patch these simply with a software update. A bootrom exploit is a bug found in the actual hardware of the device. This can't be patched by apple. Currently the A5 and A5X devices don't have bootrom exploits so there is no permanant jailbreak.

Unlocking

I am by no means an unlocking expert. I don't really even see the point because Apple sells unlocked iPhones now. Anyway, unlocking is different than jailbreaking. It is allowing your iPhone to be used on another  GSM  carrier. (AT&T and T-Mobile, rest of the world) (Sprint and Verzion use CDMA). If you hear the term  baseband  they are reffering to the sim's software version.

Software Terms

Firmware: Your iOS Software

Springboard: Your iOS Homescreen

Restart Springboard: Restart your homescreen

DFU:  A mode that allows you to restore firmware. Entered by holding Home+Power for 7 seconds then Home for another 7 seconds.

Get the most out of Cydia

Cydia is an incredbily powerful package installer. It has been around since the iPhone OS 2.0 days. It has plenty of features, some more advanced than others.

The screenshot above shows the main page in Cydia. You can see several important links. The tabs you will probably use the most is "Changes" and "Search".

In the changes tab you can update all of your apps, tweaks and themes. It is important to keep all of your packages updated. It's super easy to update them all at once. Just tap the upper right tab. You can also see all of the new packages.

In the search tab you can search for packages. This will search across all of your sources. This is most useful for when you find great packages from online sources.

Sometimes you might need to install a package from a source or repo not built into cydia. You can add a new source by tapping the sources tab and clicking edit in the upper right, and then add. Let's add Karen Tsai's repo; it has a lot of great emulators and tweaks. Type in  http://cydia.angelxwind.net/  and click add source. Be careful about adding too many sources, it could make Cydia refreshing slow.

Removing, Queueing and Package Dependencies

If you don't use a package anymore, it is highly recommended you remove it. Simply go to the Installed tab and open the package you wish to remove. Tap "Modify" in the upper right and then "Remove Package".

You can also  Queue  packages for removal or uninstall. Whether it is installed or not; simply tap install or modify in the upper right and then tap "Add to Queue". Now you can install/uninstall many packages at once!

Many packages require other packages to function properly. These are called dependencies and will be automatically installed when installing a package that requires something else. It's important to know what you're removing before removing it because another package could rely upon it.

Themes can be easily installed via Cydia. Most of the packages you see in Cydia are themes. A lot of the premium themes are paid, but they are well worth it! After installing winterboard try installing a free theme like UltraFlat!

After installing Winterboard head over to your settings app. You can easily select themes here.

As you can see the theme I have installed called "Wround" has several options. Select the ones you would like to install. Then tap winterboard in the upper left to go back. You should then respring your device and see your theme active!

Jailbreaking 101

This section is divided into two sections that relate. The first section teaches you about a file transfer protocal called SSH and the other teaches you about ROMs and Emulators.

SSH

SSH is a secure file transfer between your iDevice and your computer. You must install OpenSSH from cydia and then you are ready to get started. After installing get your IP Adress. The easiest way is to use SBSettings. You can also open your settings app, tap your Wi-Fi and then look at the info for your device.

Take note of your Wi-Fi IP Address. Now you have to download a SFTP client. I suggest Cyberduck. Open it up and select SFTP. Your username is "root" and your password is "alpine". You should change this after this guide.

You can now click connect and start browsing your device! This is the easiest way to transfer files and roms across Wi-Fi!

ROMs and Emulators

If you would like to SSH your emulators it is very easy also. Follow the above guide and SSH into the /var/mobile/Media/ROMs directory. You can download roms from coolroms.com! Simply drag them into the folder for your emulator!

If you are looking for a great emulator to use, I would use RetroArch. It emulators a bunch of classic consoles. Just search for it in Cydia, it's free!

Seas0nPass

Created by the firecore dev team, Seas0nPass is by far the best way to jailbreak the Apple TV. It provides an untethered jailbreak for just about any version!

Start out by downloading the program for Windows or Mac from:

http://support.firecore.com/ entries/387605-jailbreaking-101- seas0npass

(This should be all one line, sorry I had to divide it up to see better. There is also a detailed guide there.)

After you have downloaded open the program.

Click Create IPSW and start the jailbreaking! It will download some files, just let it do it's work!

You will then need to put your device into DFU mode. This is easy. Just hold play and pause for 7 seconds. If it doesn't work try unplugging your device and trying again.

You should see a new settings icon on your home screen! :)

Now that you are jailbroken, start learning about your new jailbreak!

aTV flash costs money, yes. Please don't pirate it because the devlopers have worked really hard and there is more than enough features to justify the price. You can download it from firecore.com for $30.

**Don't want to purchase aTV flash? Check out Nito Installer.

Some great features include being able to easily install NitoTV, XBMC, Couch Surfer to browse the web, last.fm, a medai player for local content, Plex, RSS and Weather! Go to the website for all the features!

After you download it run the app and install it on the TV. It is all very seamless. As you can see just open the .dmg and then run the installer.

Your Apple TV should then restart and then see a new icon on your home screen.

Sorry for the low quality of the following images. They are taken right onto my TV from my 4S. The below image is of some great packages. It's very easy to install thme, but your Apple TV does need to restart after. You can see the new icons on your home screen.

Jailbreaking 101

Don't want to pay $30 for aTV Flash? Nito TV is a great new installer to use your Apple TV. This app for Mac will allow you to install NitoTV and XBMC. You can download it from:

nito Installer for Mac

Have a PC? In the next version I will be writing a guide where you can use the command line.

It's super easy! Just install and find your Apple TV!

NitoTV

NitoTV is a great package manager for the Apple TV. Think of it as Cydia for the Apple TV. You can follow the lead developer on twitter @nitotv. It's very easy to browse the different packages on NitoTV. Sorry for the low quality of the images.

As you can see you can install great things like OpenSSH and netatalk. There is also easy ways to view Weather and RSS Feeds.

As you can see it's very easy to install packages and looks a lot like cydia. Browse around, look for good packages :)

XMBC was orginally developed for the first Xbox. It then moved on to other systems and went open source. it allows you to stream and play local content. After installing it through either NitoTV or the aTV Flash app you can open it up.

The interface of xbmc is very easy and simple. To the left you have Weather and Pictures. To the right is Music, Programs and the Settings. If you want to add more content you can click Add-ons and then add more.

You can install great things like Fox news, and Project Free TV. I really like the TED talks.

Add new Sources

If you ever come across a .zip file from the web that can add new content to the Apple TV you can add it to the media center.

We will be SSHing the zip file into our Apple TV. If you don't know how to do this, follow the SSH/Local Files guide on the Apple TV section.

Anyway, SSH into the /Home directory. Drag the zip file into this folder. After this go to settings/Add Ons.

You should then find all your zip files. Open them to install them. They can then be viewed.
