SwirlyMMS² - FAQ
What is the SwirlyNet™ that I hear everyone talk about?
SwirlyNet™ is a free service provided by SwirlySpace allowing you to send MMSes for free* to your SwirlyMMS² friends. To make the SwirlyNet service work, and allow you as well as your friends to send and receive messages over the SwirlyNet, you must activate it by providing your iPhone phone number, including your national prefix. SwirlySpace will only use the phone number you provide to send messages via the SwirlyNet. SwirlySpace will under NO circumstances give out the information you have provided to any third party.
Normally SwirlyMMS will first try to send an MMS via SwirlyNet and if that is not possible the MMS will be sent via your carriers MMS network. In the SwirlyMMS settings you can select that you always want your MMSes being sent via SwirlyNet and never via your carrier. If you have done that choice you will get an alert message if the MMS wasn't possible to send via SwirlyNet. In the settings you can also choose to use SwirlyNet only when Wifi is available (in contrast to use it with Wifi as well as your cellular data).
* The cost for you to send an MMS via the SwirlyNet depends on what connection type and data plan you have. For example if you have WiFi access or if you have a flat-rate cellular data plan then the cost is really nil, otherwise the cost will depend on your data plan.
How can I see that I'm properly attached to the SwirlyNet?
If you go into the settings in SwirlyMMS² you will see a group named SwirlyNet. On the first row, called "Activation", you should see a green check mark.
I have tried to activate SwirlyNet but all I get is a blue pending icon. What is going wrong?
First of all you need the normal SwirlyMMS license.
Then, when you enter the iPhone phone number, it is very important that you enter it correctly. The number shall be entered with the international prefix like this: "+17764356444". You must also have a network connection at the time of activation, either via WiFi or via cellular data.
Can I see if a message has been sent or received via SwirlyNet?
Yes, you can see it in the Sent and Inbox folders. Each message sent and received via the SwirlyNet is marked with a small blue SwirlySpace icon. You can also hear when sending via SwirlyNet since you can configure a special sent-sound for messages sent via the SwirlyNet.
The messages I send is not sent via the SwirlyNet. Why is that so?
The following are the requirements for a message to be sent via the SwirlyNet:
1) You must have activated/attached to the SwirlyNet. Activation is done under settings within SwirlyMMS², on the row SwirlyNet/Activation.
2)
All
the numbers you are sending to must be in the international prefix format (for example "+189744414534" for a US number)
3)
All
the numbers you are sending to must also be attached to the SwirlyNet (so tell all your SwirlyMMS²-friends to also attach to the SwirlyNet)
If any of these requirements are not fullfilled then the message will not be sent via SwirlyNet.
In addition to this you can also control via the settings within SwirlyMMS when and how SwirlyNet will be used. You can for example configure SwirlyNet to only be used when you have Wifi (this is actually the default setting and may cause SwirlyNet not being used if you only have cellular data coverage).
Is SwirlyMMS² available on iPhone 3G through App Store?
No, it is not. But you can find it in CydiaStore and in our own PayPal shop!
How do I download and install SwirlyMMS²?
Currently, you download and install SwirlyMMS² via CydiaStore on jailbroken iPhones
After the installation, can I send and receive MMS right away?
Before you can send and receive MMS you must configure SwirlyMMS² and ensure that you have MMS added to your service plan. You must also buy a license, either from our own PayPal shop or via CydiaStore.
I do not know which settings to configure SwirlyMMS² with?
The best way to get your MMS settings is to use the built in settings wizard. You can also see the complete settings database
here.
Other sources of information is our
forum
or
ActiveXperts
. Alternatively, you can request the settings to be sent to your iPhone over-the-air from your Service Provider or from any of the major cell phone makers like Nokia, Sony-Ericsson and Motorola. Just enter your phone-number and select a modern phone model and they will send the MMS settings to your iPhone. Yet other alternatives are to check your Service Provider's web pages for information or call their customer service department.
I'm with AT&T and they say that MMS should work after all, is that true?
Yes, since 2009-09-25 AT&T have finally activated MMS for their iPhone users.
How do I buy SwirlyMMS²?
You buy SwirlyMMS² from CydiaStore or simply by pressing the Buy button on the Information view from within SwirlyMMS².
I think SwirlyMMS² is the most useful 3rd party application, so why do you only charge $12?
Why not?
If I upgrade the firmware, or make a full restore of the iPhone can I still use my already purchased license?
Yes, the license is tied to your iPhone device and will function even if you upgrade or restore.
If I buy a new iPhone do I have to buy a new license?
Yes, the license is tied to your iPhone device.
I have bought SwirlyMMS² but have not received my license! What shall I do?
Probably your payment has not yet been cleared. Most often the payment gets cleared immediately but sometimes there can be a one- or two-hours lag. For some types of payments, like eChecks the payment can take several days before it gets cleared. As soon as the payment is cleared you will get a simple confirmation email (if you bought it from our PayPal shop) with instructions how to activate your license. If you bought it via CydiaStore you will see the state of your payment live in CydiaStore.
My payment has been cleared and when I try to Activate I get an error message saying that something has failed. What shall I do?
You have probably suffered from a temporary network or server error. Wait and try again later. If still having problems after several failed attempts, please try to Activate over WiFi instead of Edge, or vice versa.
I have already bought SwirlyMMS 1.x, why do I have to pay $6 to get access to SwirlyMMS²?
The devlopment of the major release SwirlyMMS² has been ongoing for a long time and we are very proud being able to provide it to our users now. It is loaded with breathtaking new features and we are convinced that these extra features are well worth the amount. The old SwirlyMMS 1.x is still available via Cydia for those that doesn't feel like upgrading.
Why don't you provide demo licenses anymore?
In June 2008 when we released our first SwirlyMMS version 1.0 we were very uncertain if it would work for all carriers around the world. Now, after almost a year in service and with hundreds of thousands of users, we know that it works beautifully and therefore we see no use for the demo licenses.
Can I send and receive MMS over WiFi instead of EDGE/GPRS/3G?
Yes you can if you and your friend are both connected to the SwirlyNet™. SwirlyNet is a free service provided by SwirlySpace, read more about it above. If you are not connected to the SwirlyNet the answer is: No. The Service Operators only allow MMSs to be sent and received through their special Access Points, only accessible over EDGE/GPRS/3G.
I have noticed that some of the images I receive are smaller than the original size - why?
SwirlyMMS does no resizing when receiving. However, some Service Providers automatically scales images down if they do not know the capabilities of the handset. Obviously, some Service Providers do not know what the iPhone is capable of ;-) To circumvent these auto-resize issues you can set your iPhone up to look like a mainstream handset like Nokia, Sony-Ericsson or Motorola, thus being able to receive images of any size. You do this from the settings screen where you can alter the UserAgent.
I could not find my question answered in this FAQ - what should I do?
You should head over to SwirlyMMS's

and hopyfully find out that your question has already been answered. If not, feel free to ask!
